Starting from January 1, 2026, Georgia introduced compulsory health insurance for all incoming tourists. This requirement is fixed in the Law of Georgia «On Tourism».
Article 12. Compulsory insurance for tourists entering Georgia
Tourists entering Georgia must have compulsory health and accident insurance.
Persons entering Georgia who travel for business, leisure or other personal purposes, with at least an overnight stay and for a period of no more than 1 year, with the exception of employment, are covered by compulsory insurance. The law does not apply to persons with Georgian citizenship or residence permit, as well as trucker drivers./p>
The border guards have the right to require confirmation of the policy upon entry into the country in printed or electronic form. In his absence, entry to Georgia may be refused. Penalties for the lack of medical travel insurance are currently not provided for in the Law «On Tourism».
Insurance policy requirements:
- the insurance policy is required for the entire period of stay in Georgia;
- issued by a Georgian or foreign insurance company;
- policy must be in Georgian or English.;
- accident insurance option is enabled;
- insured amount of coverage is not less than 30 000 ₾ (~10 000 €);
It is better to arrange medical travel insurance in advance, at least one day before the start of the trip. Many insurance companies in Russia offer these types of insurance for trips abroad online and issue policies in Russian and English versions.
